NED11: Module 6

Notes from Unit Outline
Tips about typography:
  • Keep line length to around 60 characters
  • If you must use long lines, use double spacing to make it more comprehensible
  • Long paragraphs are discouraged, short paragraphs get to the point and are more appropriate for the click and go environment
  • Too light or too heavy fonts may be difficult to read and thin strokes tend to disappear
  • Condensed or expanded letters are more difficult to read
  • All capitals is also too difficult to read - keep uppercase for headings
  • Text aligned to the left is better than centred or right justified
  • Leave italics for emphasis rather than large blocks of text
  • People tend to read the biggest elements first, like headlines or titles, then quotes then captions and finally the text
  • Avoid novelty typefaces
